JPG to PNG

JPG to PNG is a free tool that converts a JPG image into a PNG file entirely in your browser.

How do I convert a JPG to PNG?

Use the tool to convert your JPG image to PNG. The work is done entirely in your browser, and your image is never uploaded to a server.

Browser-based processing is particularly useful for private photographs, draft artwork and internal screenshots because the source file stays on your device. Very large JPG images may still take longer or use substantial memory because your browser and device must decode the JPG and encode the pixels as PNG locally.

What changes when JPG is converted to PNG?

The image is decoded from JPG and encoded again using PNG's lossless compression, but existing JPG compression damage remains in the pixels. Conversion changes the file format rather than recovering detail that the original JPG has already discarded.

Property JPG Converted PNG
Compression Lossy compression designed to reduce photographic file sizes Lossless compression that preserves the decoded pixels
Transparency Not supported The format supports alpha transparency, but conversion cannot invent a transparent background
Animation Not supported A normal converted PNG is static; the current PNG standard also supports animated PNG
Typical file size Usually smaller for photographs Usually larger when the source is a photograph
Browser and platform support Widely supported by browsers, operating systems and image editors Widely supported by browsers, operating systems and image editors

JPG often produces visible blocks, ringing around sharp edges or colour smearing after strong compression. Saving those decoded pixels as PNG prevents another lossy encoding stage, but it does not remove those artefacts.

When is converting JPG to PNG a good idea?

Conversion makes sense when a website, application or production process specifically requires PNG, or when you want to avoid further lossy compression during subsequent saves. It can also help when an image will receive text, lines or repeated edits and you want to avoid adding further JPG compression damage each time it is saved.

  • Convert a downloaded JPG before adding labels or interface annotations in an image editor.
  • Use PNG when an upload form, content management system or software package rejects JPG files.
  • Convert a small logo supplied as JPG before editing it, while accepting that the original background will remain opaque.
  • Keep the JPG instead when you are publishing a large photograph and download size matters.

PNG is not automatically a higher-quality version of a JPG. A lossy source does not become lossless in retrospect, and a blurred or heavily compressed image will remain blurred or damaged. If you have the original camera file, artwork or lossless export, use that instead.

Worked conversion examples

A photograph named garden-party.jpg becomes PNG image data after conversion. Its visible content and pixel dimensions should represent the decoded JPG image, while the stored file will commonly be larger because PNG compression is poorly suited to complex photographic detail.

Consider a white-background product logo saved as JPG. Converting it to PNG does not remove the white area or turn it transparent. Transparency requires background removal or editing after conversion, followed by saving the edited image as PNG with an alpha channel.

A screenshot previously saved as a low-quality JPG may contain fuzzy lettering and coloured fringes. PNG will preserve that current appearance without another lossy save, but it cannot reconstruct the original sharp text. If the screenshot can be captured again, saving the new capture directly as PNG is usually the better route.

How large will the PNG file be?

The PNG will commonly be larger than the JPG, particularly for photographs, gradients and images containing sensor noise. There is no reliable fixed ratio because file size depends on the dimensions, pixel patterns, JPG quality and the way the PNG encoder compresses the image.

Flat graphics with repeated colours may compress efficiently as PNG. Detailed photographs usually do not, so a modest JPG can become a considerably larger PNG without looking better. Because JPG-to-PNG conversion can substantially increase the size of a photographic file, check the converted PNG's size before placing it on a web page or sending it through a service with an attachment limit.

If web performance is the main concern, JPG may remain the more practical choice for an opaque photograph. JPG to WebP is another option when you need a modern web format with efficient photographic compression.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing the file extension from .jpg to .png work?

No. Renaming the extension does not change the data stored inside the file, and some software will reject the mismatch. The image must be decoded and encoded in PNG format.

Can a converted PNG be used for printing?

It can be printed, but conversion does not add resolution or improve the source detail. Converting JPG data to PNG also does not create a printer's required colour space, physical size or PDF delivery format, so check the printer's specification before supplying the file.

What happens if the JPG is damaged or only has a JPG extension?

A browser may be unable to decode a corrupt file or a different format that has merely been renamed as JPG. If JPEG decoding also fails in an image viewer, obtain a valid JPG copy rather than repeatedly changing its extension.

Final checks

Open the converted PNG and confirm that it has the expected orientation, dimensions and appearance. Check the file size as well, especially before using it on a website. Keep the original JPG until the PNG has opened correctly and any required transparency or editing has been completed.
