PNG to ICO

PNG to ICO is a free tool that converts PNG image files into ICO files for use as favicons and Windows icons.
How do I convert a PNG to ICO?
Select the PNG file, start the conversion, then save the resulting ICO file.
- Select the PNG image you want to convert.
- Run the conversion and save the ICO output.
- Open the ICO file or use it as a favicon to check that its size, transparency and small-scale appearance are suitable.

The conversion is done entirely in your browser. Your PNG is never uploaded to a server, which is useful when the source contains an unpublished logo, internal product artwork or another image you do not want to send elsewhere.

What changes when PNG is converted to ICO?
The image is placed into the ICO format, which is designed for icons rather than ordinary page graphics.
- Transparency PNG supports full alpha transparency. ICO can also represent smooth transparency in 32-bit image entries, while older icon data may use a simpler one-bit transparency mask. Check for transparency artefacts around fine edges and shadows in the ICO output after conversion.
- Animation PNG can contain animation, while ICO has no standard animated equivalent, so animated frames cannot be represented as an ordinary ICO icon.
- Compression PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression. ICO is a container and may hold PNG-compressed images or older BMP-style image data, depending on how the ICO was created.
- Purpose PNG is a general image format supported throughout websites, documents and applications. ICO is mainly used for website favicons and icons in Microsoft Windows.
- Multiple sizes An ICO file can contain several versions of an icon, such as 16 × 16, 32 × 32 and 48 × 48 pixels. Conversion alone does not confirm which entries are present, so inspect the resulting file if a particular set is required.
Converting a PNG does not improve its underlying detail. Enlarging a small or blurred PNG before conversion will still produce a soft-looking icon.
When should I convert PNG to ICO?
Convert PNG to ICO when a website, Windows application or older integration specifically asks for an .ico file.
A common case is creating favicon.ico for a website. Browsers generally support PNG favicons too, but ICO remains useful for conventional favicon paths, older software and packages that expect one file containing several icon sizes. Windows also uses ICO files for application shortcuts, while executable icons are normally stored as icon resources within executable files.
Conversion is less useful when the image will appear inside a web page, email or document. PNG has broader support in those settings and is easier to edit. It is also a poor idea if you expect the conversion to repair a low-quality source. Both PNG and suitable ICO image entries can be lossless, but converting from any previously degraded image cannot restore detail that has already been discarded.
How large will the ICO file be?
An ICO file may be larger or smaller than the source PNG, although an ICO containing several resolutions is often larger than a single PNG image.
There is no fixed PNG-to-ICO file-size ratio. Size depends on the number of icon entries, their pixel dimensions, colour depth, image complexity and whether each entry uses PNG compression or BMP-style storage. A single PNG-compressed entry may remain close to the source size. Several BMP-style entries can increase it considerably.
For favicons, visual clarity at small dimensions usually matters more than saving a few hundred bytes. Inspect the icon at 16 × 16 and 32 × 32 pixels rather than judging it only from a large preview.
Preparing a PNG for a favicon
Start with a square image that has a simple shape and enough space around its main subject. A detailed 512 × 512 logo may be clear at its original size but turn into an indistinct patch when reduced to a browser-tab icon.
- Use a square canvas rather than a wide banner or wordmark.
- Remove tiny lettering that cannot remain legible at favicon sizes.
- Keep transparent padding even on all sides so the icon does not appear off-centre.
- Check pale artwork against both light and dark browser themes.
- Avoid converting a 16 × 16 source into larger icon entries. Larger ICO entries created from the 16 × 16 PNG will not contain extra detail.
For example, a 512 × 512 transparent PNG containing a single clear symbol is a practical source for favicon.ico. A 1,200 × 400 company banner is not. Converting that PNG banner into an ICO file does not redesign, crop or simplify it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rename a PNG file from .png to .ico?
No. Renaming the extension leaves the internal PNG data unchanged, so software expecting a genuine ICO container may reject it. The image data must be converted and written in ICO format.
Can one ICO file contain several icon sizes?
Yes. The ICO specification allows several images with different dimensions and colour depths in one file. This lets software choose an appropriate entry without scaling one image for every context.
Why does my icon have a white or dark fringe?
Fringes can come from semi-transparent edge pixels that were prepared against a particular background colour or from alpha-channel or transparency-mask handling during conversion or rendering. Examine the source PNG on both white and black backgrounds, and remove any unwanted matte colour before converting it.
Should I use ICO on macOS?
ICO is not the usual format for native macOS application icons, which commonly use ICNS or asset catalogues. An ICO file can still be relevant on macOS when it belongs to a website favicon or a cross-platform project that explicitly requests ICO.
Is GIF a better choice if the source is animated?
ICO does not provide standard animated icon frames. For a simple animated web image, PNG to GIF may be more appropriate, although GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame and is not a replacement for a conventional favicon.
Final checks
Confirm that the saved file has the .ico extension, remains recognisable at small sizes and has clean transparent edges. If the target platform specifies exact dimensions or requires several embedded sizes, inspect the ICO entries before replacing the existing icon, then clear any browser favicon cache when checking the result on a website.
