What is octal and how does it work?

Octal is a base-8 number system that uses the digits 0 to 7. Each position represents a power of eight, just as each decimal position represents a power of ten.

Octal is closely related to binary because one octal digit represents exactly three binary bits. For example, binary 110 101 becomes octal 65 because 110 is 6 and 101 is 5. This grouping made octal convenient on systems whose word lengths were divisible by three.

When octal represents text, each byte is first treated as a numeric value. For the ASCII letter A, the decimal value is 65. Repeated division by eight gives remainders of 1, 0 and 1 when read in reverse, so decimal 65 becomes octal 101. Converting 101 back gives 1 × 64 + 0 × 8 + 1, which is 65 and therefore A.

How do I convert text to octal?

Numbers entered as text are characters rather than numeric quantities. For example, the character 1 has its own character code. It is not automatically treated as the decimal number one.

The conversion uses byte-oriented PHP functions, including ord, chr, decoct and octdec. Plain ASCII text is therefore the clearest input. Spaces and punctuation also have character values. Accented or non-Latin characters may consist of several encoded bytes, so they can produce several octal values rather than one value per visible character.

Where is octal used in practice?

• Unix and Linux: file modes such as 755 and 644 use octal digits to represent read, write and execute permissions.

Common mistakes and limitations

A common hand-conversion mistake is reading division remainders in the order they were produced. When converting decimal to octal, read the remainders from last to first. Reading them from top to bottom gives the digits in reverse order.

This tool performs character conversion, not encryption, compression or validation of arbitrary numeric notation. Converting text to octal does not conceal sensitive information because anyone can reverse the values.

Is 08 a valid octal number?

No. Standard octal notation permits only the digits 0 through 7, so 8 and 9 are invalid. A parser may reject 08 or interpret it under different rules, depending on the language or application.

Does a leading zero mean a number is octal?

In ordinary mathematical notation, a leading zero does not change the base. In some programming languages and older parsers, however, a leading zero marks an octal literal. Check the language specification rather than relying on appearance alone.

Why would I use octal instead of hexadecimal?

Use octal when the data naturally divides into three-bit groups or when working with Unix permissions and existing octal notation. Hexadecimal fits four-bit groups and is more common for memory addresses, colours, byte values and modern debugging output.

Can negative numbers and fractions be written in octal?

Yes, octal notation can represent negative and fractional numbers in mathematics. A minus sign keeps its usual meaning, while digits after the radix point represent eighths, sixty-fourths and further powers of eight. Is octal text safe to send as hidden information?
